FEATURED TITLE: BOTH END IN SPECULATION

The second book in
The Vena Goodwin Mystery Series

About the cover from the author:
I love it! You've got everything there:
Vena, the avenging angel,
and the missing pages of the Keats' poem.
Plus, you kept the colors which will help
people identify the series--just wonderful.
––Nancy Avery Dafoe

This was a fun cover!
As the second in a series,
I try to keep elements of the first book
so readers will identify this as part of a series.
In addition, the author had a clear vision
of what she wanted for a cover.
This came together quickly
and pleased both the author and me!

ABOUT THE COVER FROM THE AUTHOR:
"I really appreciate your work and help."
– Joseph Allen

COVER CHALLENGES from behind the keyboard:
This cover was one where I loved the first cover...
and the author blasted it. Said it did not fit the book.
So...a total redesign.
This time with more faces than I've ever put on the cover of a book.
But it came together and worked!
So, the author was pleased and I was pleased.
But I'm saving that first cover,
because I know someday there will be a book
that it fits perfectly!

FEATURED TITLE: THE CRADLE OF DESTINY

The latest release from

ABOUT THE COVER
The journey of a book cover can be a story itself, as was the case with this cover.

I started out with several versions that I did not send to the author because I didn't like them.

When I found a concept and colors that clicked, I sent that version to the author. Unfortunately, the graphic I used for one of the main elements of the story did not fit what was in the book!

Then came a dozen versions of me searching for something that both matched the author's vision and pleased me. Not happy with any of them.

So I went back to the design of the initial version I sent the author. Fashioned a tailor-made Arc that pleased both me and the author, and started resizing elements on the cover and adding other elements to draw in different parts of the story.

In addition, instead of solid black silhouettes of the two main characters on the front that we started out with, the author and I came up with some select additions of color for these--a flowing brownish-red cloak for one and the stark white hair of another. Success at last!

In the words of the author: "I love these...I am very pleased and appreciative of your efforts."

As always, I am humbled to be part of bringing an author's vision to life. And, Greg, I wish you much luck with this debut novel!

FEATURED TITLE: FACE YOUR FEARS

Digital or print formats

A BIT ABOUT DESIGNING THE COVER:
As usual, I approach designing a book cover
as teamwork between the author and me.
First, the author fills out a cover art questionnaire
that I use to draft an initial concept of the cover.
Sometimes the first draft is close to their perfect vision,
but more often it's a starting point and
we revise, tweak, and sometimes start over from there.
For this cover, we started working with
silhouettes for the main characters,
but that just wasn't coming together.
So I sent the author a version of the cover using photos.
His response: "Didn’t think I’d like photos but I love Nate!!!!"
He sent me a link to a photo to use for the other character, Jude,
and the cover came together quickly.
Some tweaks here and here and voila!
It's final! "Let's do it!" the author said.

EXCERPT: GROUND EFFECT
Walid’s running shoes were almost dry. The ride from Del Rio had gone well, so far, but when he glanced to his left, he saw Ghali’s eyelids drooping. They’d been awake for almost two days and had more than a hundred miles to go. The propane tanks in the bed of the stake body truck jingled when they touched as the truck passed over bumps in the road. It was early in the morning and, after crossing the border in the night, they found the truck where their instructions foretold it would be. Now, on the desolate highway moving east into the rising sun, Walid squished his toes inside the shoes and felt the coolness of the Rio Grande’s muddy remains, wishing he could get an American hamburger to fill his growling stomach.
In halting English Walid said, “Wake up. Do you need coffee?” The prospect of finding anything but scrub bushes and dust in this flat near desert seemed remote. The small town they just passed through was still waking up and the only place to eat was crowded with vehicles and men in broad hats and coveralls moving in and out. They had not dared to stop. The long straight road was carrying Ghali to dreamland.
Walid rolled down the widow and let in a greater volume of cool air. It would soon warm in the desert sun and the truck seemed to lack air conditioning. Even the beat up cars back in Benghazi usually had working air conditioning, when they could find petrol.
The truck hummed and jingled and Walid looked up to see the first curve in miles just ahead. He started to look over again at the driver when the truck drifted into the curve, but rather than follow the road to the right, it moved over the yellow center lines.
Bulis!” came out in Arabic from the startled Walid as he looked straight into the front grill of a Texas state trooper car sliding to the side to avoid smacking head on into the truck.

AUTHOR BIO

After writing professional documents for many years, Mike has finally devoted time to his true passion, writing fiction where the story and characters come alive in the reader’s mind. While his days were filled with authoring hundreds of detailed crime reports, arrest affidavits, search warrants and grand jury presentments, he took some of his own time and devoured books by the dozens. Reading not only was a rewarding diversion, it provided him with the added education he needed to function at a high level in his profession. This has led to the creation of Mike’s crime/suspense/detective novels Sink Rate, Rope Break and Side Slip, the first three in the Sam Deland Crime Novel series.

Mike writes with the real life experience that many years of law enforcement shaped and influenced. The stories may be fiction but are based on how things happen in the real world. His books are honest and captivating novels written with a unique voice that will both chill and charm. Mike is a veteran police detective. He did it all from rookie patrolman to Senior Special Agent. His life has been enriched by a wonderful marriage, parenting, work, flying, sailing and good books. Mike is a lifelong outdoorsman, an experienced tactical firearms instructor, champion sailplane pilot and the captain of his own sailboat. All of these skills have made his novels vivid, exciting and real. Now retired after a career with three law enforcement agencies, Mike enjoys winters writing in Naples, Florida and summers sailing, writing and researching the next novel at his rural Pennsylvania home.
